The personal story

Why I keep growing Foothill Palo Verde

Its scientific name, microphylla, means small-leaved. The tiny leaves may appear briefly after rain, while the green bark continues photosynthesis when heat and drought cause the leaves to drop.

Foothill Palo Verde is a characteristic tree of the rocky uplands of the Sonoran Desert. It is smaller and slower-growing than Blue Palo Verde, with tiny leaves and yellow-green bark.

The leaves may disappear during dry periods, while the green trunk and branches continue photosynthesis. In spring, its restrained desert framework can become covered in pale-yellow flowers.
